CLASS RANK AND GPA
Parents and students need to understand the importance of class rank and grade point average (GPA). The grades your student begins to earn in his/her freshman year will start to become a part of the class rank and GPA. CLASS RANK is where your student ranks in relationship to all other students in the class. GPA is computed by averaging the semester grades in all credit-bearing classes. The student with the highest GPA is ranked #1 in the class and is followed by students in descending order. The rank can and will fluctuate during high school.
It is extremely important that you and your student understand the impact that freshman year grades make. It is difficult in later grades to overcome poor performance in the ninth grade. Senior high students often regret that they did not take their freshman year seriously. Remember that the 9th grade year represents one-third of the academic record that determines college admissions.
Keep in mind that a student’s permanent cumulative record (transcript) does not reflect Pre-AP, AP, or honors points. The reason is that the cumulative record cannot reflect a grade over 100. The quality points that are earned by taking these more challenging classes are, however, used when determining the GPA and rank. Your student’s GPA and rank are shown on the transcript, but they are not included in the actual semester grades shown.
In late February, our students’ GPA/rank will be available in the Counselors’ Office. An announcement will be made and students who are interested in requesting this information will be able to visit with the counselors during their lunch hour. Students will need to show their student ID. A parent wanting this information will need to come to the counseling office and must show identification.
ATTENDANCE
Good attendance is vital to a successful education. Students must be in attendance 90 percent of each class each semester in order to be eligible to earn credit. If a student has excessive absences, he/she can lose credit in a class even though the actual grade may be passing.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
If you attended COLLEGE 101 in October, you will recall we told you that a student’s contribution in the community is often a factor in the college admissions process. Summer is an excellent time for volunteering especially since many of our students are still too young to get a job. There are opportunities ranging from work at the public library or parks and recreation to humane societies and nursing homes, etc. Please check at your local library for these volunteer opportunities. A great website to visit is www.volunteerpowercrew.org.
