Michelle McCloskey and Nathan Hogg were presented The Exchange Club of Lake Highlands “Youth of the Month” award for January.
Each student presented an essay titled “Inspired by the Power of Community Service.”
Michelle McCloskey ranks 8th in her graduating class. Her favorite classes at LHHS include AP Calculus, AP English 4, and AP US History. Michelle is a captain with the Wildcat Wranglers, Student Council vice president, Girls Service League secretary and a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Principal’s Student Advisory Council. “My duty as a Lake Highlands senior, a college student, and an American citizen is to not get lost in the materialism of life, but to continue to dedicate myself to the improvement of society. Inspired by the power of community service, I truly believe that helping others is the key to the future, said Michelle. “By individually volunteering time and effort and also by influencing others to do the same, with service any individual can have a positive effect on the universe. Community service is and always should be an essential prerequisite of all Wildcats.” Following graduation, Michelle plans to attend either Vanderbilt University or the University of Texas in Austin. She is the daughter of Pam and Jim McCloskey.
Nathan Hogg is the number 1 student at Lake Highlands. He is captain of the Varsity Cross Country Team, president of Mu Alpha Theta and enjoys playing Ultimate Frisbee. Nathan’s favorite subjects include AP Physics C, and AP Psychology. “There are numerous ways that I can improve others’ lives right here in my own neighborhood,” said Nathan. “Everything from tutoring elementary students, to delivering meals to the homeless, to plain old manual labor can make an impact. The most important thing is that I do something, because like my friend from New Orleans said, if I am not willing to help my community in all the ways I can, my community may not get the help it needs.” Nathan is a member of the Boy Scouts of America and Younglife. He is the son of Ginny and Kenneth Hogg.
The Youth of the Month awards are presented each month to two students selected by LHHS teachers. All selections will be eligible for Youth of the Year awards in May 2010.
